WEBTUTOR 4.1 To learn how to write your own web pages then look at an excellent tutorial called WebTutor41, it is available free. Ensure that you are online with your dial up service provider then click the link below:

http://junior.apk.net/~jbarta/webtutor.zip

Reply when prompted and select "save to disk". It will take 10 to 20 minutes to download. The files are compressed using WinZip, so you will need a WinZip program to install it on your computer. When unzipping make sure you create and unzip to a directory called C:/webtutor. To run Webtutor you need to click on <index.html>. Rightclick on the file name, make a short cut and place it on your desktop, it will then be quicker to access in the future.

JAVA-SCRIPT If you fancy something a bit more involved you could try out an on-line tutorial on JavaScript. Click here

http://www.w3schools.com/js/default.asp

WINZIP If you don't have WinZip you can download WinZip free from:

http://www.winzip.com

WS_FTP_LE To upload and modify your new website creation, a fantastic program called WS_FTP_LE is available free from:

http://www.ipswitch.com

Click on the above link. When in the website click the link: DOWNLOAD-EVALUATIONS. Then select the product type: WS_FTP_LE. Again it will take 10 to 20 minutes to download.

UPLOADING YOUR WEBSITE - DETAILS NEEDED In order to upload your website you will need a couple of details from your internet service provider, this is for setting up WS_FTP_LE. For example to upload web pages to freeserve webspace you would use:

  • Host Name/Address: uploads.webspace.freeserve.net
  • Host type: autodetect
  • User ID: myusername.freeserve.co.uk
  • Password: ********

No matter where you are in the world, and no matter which dial up connection you are using you should (in most cases) be able to upload your website. For example, I usually dial up with freeserve and I am able to update webpages with Euphony, Freeserve and Flexauto!   Your home page should normally be a web page file named: index.html

ALWAYS ALWAYS use lower case letters for every file name and link. Also if you insist on using one of those wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) packages then do at least have a look at the html code using note pad, you may find that some of the links to files are located on your hard drive, if this is the case what may look like a perfect creation to you may not even be accessible to someone else!

TIP of the DAY - at least try it out using the tutorials!
